The Mighty Zambezi River. Its slow-moving waters teem with hippos and crocs before it tumbles over the Victoria Falls. Elephant feed below huge Baobab and towering Ilala palm, and along its banks you’ll find some of the finest gin and tonics around.
We might have guessed at the above before we embarked on our first journey up to Zim but we certainly didn’t think we’d find the kind of trails we did. Sure, there are the usual dirt roads that meander through the villages and there are some great jeep tracks that weave between the bush allowing us to spot the myriad wildlife species that roam freely up there.
Yet it was the single tracks that surprised us the most. Some of them are man-made but most are natural bush tracks carved through the hills by herds of elephant, buffalo, kudu, wildebeest and all the other species that we were fortunate enough to see from the saddle of our bicycles.
When the animal sightings had come and gone, in its place the constant presence of the river along the way. A steep gorge with turbulent waters below the falls the one day, a lazy giant above the falls the next. It wasn’t all slow exploring through wild places either. We sometimes allowed our guides some rest from the wildlife and explored further into community land via goat tracks and dirt roads, some local spaza shops for a Coke in the heat, and then back again in search of the lodge pool. These varied riding conditions allowed us to custom tune the distances and speed depending on how we felt, and we even made time to stop in at the brewery for a local ale.
With 3 days of riding done, we opted for a change of scenery on the 4th and did a day’s paddling down the Zambezi, one of the many different activity options. It was great to have a different perspective from the river that we’d been watching and following the whole time and when the hippos allowed we snuck in the first of many Zambezi River swims.
With so much riding potential, we can’t wait to put together a couple of different itineraries up there. Whether you’re more adventurous, or more discerning, Vic Falls is going to be top notch destination. And no matter which way you lean, the GnT’s all taste just as good.
