Hills and valleys of sand stretching as far as the eye can see in all directions…The Namib desert isn’t heaven but it’s damn close. Starting in Namibia’s Erongo bushveld, we traverse the formidable desert plains en route to the coastal town of Swakopmund. Free-camping brings us to legendary locations like Spitzkoppe and the Khan River. The bustle of the city is a million miles away as we soak in spectacular African sunsets and bask in the starlight of a milky way uncorrupted by light pollution. Keep a sharp eye out for the elusive desert wildlife, like the iconic oryx antelope or the sly brown hyena. As we conclude our trip in Swakopmund, enjoy the feast of a traditional meal to reward your tired muscles.
NAMIB TRAIL ITINERARY
Namibia is a vast place which means some big days in the saddle here. As a result, the distances on the Namib Trail can not be shortened. We always have the back-up 4x4 should you want to jump in. The Namib Trail is a point to point, so those opting to ride the whole way will do so all on their bikes.
THE JOURNEY BEGINS
You will be met at Windhoek airport by a representative and taken by road to Ai Aiba lodge in the Erongo Mountains. This will be the last car transfer for the next few days until our short 4x4 journey into Swakopmund at the end of our trip.
At Ai-Aiba Lodge, you will be met by your guide and host for the next few days and shown to your room. Lunch will be served while they go through the tour briefing for the next few days. Your guide will assist you in any bike set-up required, before heading out for a warm-up ride of approximately 20km within the Erongo Conservancy. We’ll keep an eye out for some of the local wildlife including oryx, warthog, springbok, kudu, giraffe and even the more elusive residents like brown hyena and leopard before making our way to our sundowner spot.
Back at the lodge, we will enjoy a local meal and a briefing on what to expect the following day. Finish the day around the fire overlooking the waterhole to see who else comes to drink…
ERONGO TO SPITZKOPPE
The first full day and we have a target to aim for, the towering Spitzkoppe. This day is approx. 70km.
We'll weave along meandering jeep tracks as the vegetation begins to thin out when we leave the Erongos and head for Spitzkoppe. One or two local villages dot the way to our lunch stop. After lunch, we have a tough section of open desert before making our way around Spitzkoppe itself to get to our free-camp. After a cold drink and a hot shower, we can spend the afternoon relaxing in our camp or exploring the rock formations of this magical place. Then it’s a short walk to a viewpoint to yet another Namibian sunset before a local braai for dinner.
SPITZKOPPE TO KHAN FREE CAMP
We leave the refuge of the rocks of Spitzkoppe and tackle the open plains on the route to the dry Khan River Valley over 85km.
Again the vegetation changes as we ride over the gravel planes. Once we get to the railway lines, they’ll guide us to our lunch stop and onwards to the Khan river canyon. A couple more kilometres along the base of the canyon and we’ll be at our camp in the river. We’ll enjoy the fading light through the walls of the canyon before the firelight takes over and we enjoy another meal around the campfire.
DESERT FREE CAMP TO SWAKOPMUND
Our final 85km takes us through the Namib Naukluft National Park and through a true desert landscape, sometimes not a piece of vegetation in sight. The exposed landscape is a wonder to cycle through.
One last stretch of district road leads us down into the dry Swakop River to our endpoint and a well deserved cold drink at Goanikontes Oasis. One last bit of fun as we head along the Swakop river in a 4x4 to Swakopmund itself. Here we settle into our lovely hotel on the beach, a stark contrast from the past few days, from where we can explore the historic town before it’s off to a traditional restaurant for a festive final dinner.
