The Lower Zambezi valley offers you an undiluted African experience for your cycle-safari. Footpaths and dirt roads span between the Zambezi and Kafue rivers as we move between villages and farms. Keep an eye out for the wildlife as we employ the service of local community ponts to cross the water. We also explore the world-famous Mana Pools National Park along the wild southern banks of the Zambezi. Relive the memories of the day with newfound friends while you drift down the river with a G 'n T or maybe try your hand at nabbing a tiger fish…that is if the resident wildlife don’t beat you to it. Replenish your energy stores each evening as we retire to the luxury of our river-side lodge.
ZAMBEZI RIVER TRAIL ITINERARY
The mighty Zambezi River and its wildlife await on this amazing adventure through some of Zambia's finest mountain biking terrain.
THE JOURNEY TO THE RIVER BEGINS
On arrival at Lusaka Airport, make your way to the private charter terminal for your short 30min flight down the escarpment to Chiawa. From here, you will be collected and transported to our lodge. After settling in along the banks of the river we will have a briefing for the next couple of days of riding as well as any necessary bicycle set-up before heading out on an afternoon ride towards the Kafue river. We end on the Kafue and have a sundowner boat ride through the confluence and along the Zambezi to our lodge where we’ll get up close to the hippos for the first time and maybe even some of the valleys elephant.
Back at our lodge we end our first day on the banks of the Zambezi with only the days riding stories and call of lion and hyena on the opposite bank.
LOWER ZAMBEZI/KAFUE RETURN
Depart the lodge and head out on a track maintained by local guide Evans, the aptly named Evans Commute. We head north along the Kafue through riverine single track before crossing over on a community pont. Then we head back down the opposite bank towards the Zambezi before crossing over a second pont, this time at the confluence. A short track takes us back to the lodge.
This afternoon we have a special lunch spot as we head out onto the Zambezi just before lunch time for an island braai on one of the many sandbanks. The best view of the comings and goings along this mighty river while having lunch and a drink on the water's edge. Safe water levels permitting we may have a swim in one of the shallow pools away from the hippos and crocodiles before slowly cruising further down the river for some game viewing or to try land one of the Zambezis famous tigerfish. Then it’s back to the lodge with the sun setting in front of us.
Today we start off heading north before we turn right and head along the escarpment through the local villages. A relaxed ride on mainly jeep track and gravel roads takes us further towards the Lower Zambezi National Park. Our destination is Mvuu lodge where we’ll enjoy lunch on the deck overlooking Mana Pools on the Zimbabwean side of the river. Bikes are then loaded onto the boats for a ride back down the river with wildlife on either side.
Then it's back at the lodge, it’s time to relax before our final dinner alongside the river.
RETURN HOME – LOWER ZAMBEZI TO LUSAKA INTERNATIONAL
We wake up to the chorus of the river for the last time while we enjoy the final moments over breakfast. A short transfer will take us back to the private strip for our flight back to Lusaka.
For those who still want to see more of this amazing country, please enquire about adding on a custom itinerary put together by our team. Otherwise, just stay right where you are at one of our lodges and enjoy the slow pace along the mighty Zambezi.
DAY ONE - A LINE
On arrival at Lusaka Aiprort, you will be met by a reprasentative and transfered by road 1hour south of Lusaka to Lilayi Lodge. After settling in we will have a breifing for the next couple of days of riding, after which we will head out for a short afternoon ride through the highlands and Lilayi coservancy. Keep your eyes open for Lilayi’s abundant wildlife. Our first evening will be spent on the stoep enjoying a delicious dinner to the sounds of nightjars. Fuel up, we’re going to need it for tomorrow.
LILAYI TO THE LOWER ZAMBEZI
DAY TWO - A LINE
This is the big day and we are in for a real expedition. We will wind our way along the highlands through stands of indigenous trees and small settlements before an epic drop off the escarpment. Don’t be fooled though, there’s plenty of tough sections to get to this point, and we still have some work to do on the valley floor before we arrive at Kiambi Lodge. Once the hard work is done, we can relax next to the pool, enjoy the view up the mighty Zambezi, or do some game viewing aboard a boat between the rivers various channels and islands. Everything is done by boat in this part of the world and this will certainly be the first of many trips on the river.
LOWER ZAMBEZI ALONG KAFUE
DAY THREE - A LINE
Wake up to the sounds of lions roaring and the iconic fish eagle before our last days ride through the Lower Zambezi valley. Riverine forests and farmlands weave together to give us a great final days ride that gets us back to the lodge early to enjoy more time on the river. For those looking to stretch the legs a little further, we may head west to the Kafue River. From there, bikes and riders alike will be collected by boat for a cruise down the Kafue and through the confluence back onto the Zambezi to Kiambi Lodge. For those with energy to spare, there is game viewing from the river or even a bit of tiger fishing, and no better way to end off the trip than our last sundowner.
